Many NDIS participants have expressed confusion around STA holidays and whether or not the NDIS funds disability holidays. So, let’s begin by addressing the elephant in the room:

The NDIS does not fund holidays for disabled and carers in Australia…

However, the NDIS will definitely support you with funding that is related to supports that help you achieve the goals set out in your plan. The main point to note is that the NDIS will only fund supports and services that it deems reasonable and necessary. This means that the NDIS will cover expenses that are directly related to your disability while you are on a holiday.

For example, if you require a travel support worker on your trip to help you with your disability then this can be funded by the NDIS (excluding their travel or accommodation costs).

It’s important to note that you will be unable to claim general holiday expenses while travelling such as flights, accommodation, food and transport. There are a few exceptions where you might require specialised items relating to equipment or transport that may be funded such as hoist equipment or accessible transport services.

NDIS respite holidays

NDIS respite holidays are a great option for NDIS participants that are looking for a short holiday away from their usual routine without the typical expenses of a holiday abroad.

How it works
You are able to allocate funding from your plan towards having a break away from home such as a holiday house somewhere nearby. This is a fantastic alternative to a holiday abroad where you can unwind and enjoy your time in a peaceful location without having to worry about your funding.

There are many great locations to choose from in Melbourne. It all just depends on your goals and what sort of getaway you’d like to have. You can choose to have a break in a suburban area that has a lot of fun things to do nearby or you can take your NDIS respite holiday to the countryside and enjoy the calmness that comes with it. Either way, there are many options to choose from when considering your next NDIS holiday accommodation.

Holidays paid by the NDIS such as these are available as long as they fall under the classification of reasonable and necessary supports that are being provided for you. Unlike going for a holiday overseas, The NDIS can cover the following expenses for STA:

  • Therapeutic supports including behaviour support
  • Daily personal activities
  • Accommodation
  • Negotiated activities
  • Transport to enable participation in the community
  • Home modification
  • Mobility equipment

As stated on the NDIS website under supports funded, the NDIS will not fund the follow types of supports:

  • Supports that are responsibility of another government system or community service
  • Supports that are not related to a person’s disability
  • Day-to-day living costs that are unrelated to a participant’s support needs
  • Anything that is likely to cause harm to the participant or pose a risk to others.
