Respite Care Melbourne

What is respite care?

Respite care is temporary care for a person who has needs that cannot be met in their current living situation. Respite helps relieve the stress of caring for a family member, partner or friend and also allows parents to attend work appointments, school functions and other important activities.

An important part of respite care is the fact that you can choose when to use it. For example, you may need short-term assistance with your mother’s bathing, housekeeping or cooking for a few hours each week so that she can go out with her friends. Or maybe you have an elderly parent who needs help getting out of bed every morning but can manage most things on his own after breakfast time. Whatever your situation demands, respite services Melbourne will ensure that there is someone around to help when needed without affecting your ability as a caregiver.

Who provides short term respite care?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can provide funding for respite care services to individuals that are eligible. Disability respite services in Melbourne are usually delivered by NDIS Service Providers. Family members or friends may also provide informal respite care from time to time.

Where is respite provided?

NDIS service providers can deliver temporary respite services Melbourne in a few different ways depending on your needs. STA respite can be provided in your home or in a respite care accommodation. Respite home care services will allow you to continue living at home and maintain your independence. However, there are some circumstances where it may be better for an individual and their family for you to move into a residential care facility such as when you are unable to remain safe at home without support from others.

How much does respite care cost?

Short term respite care can be a great way to give your family a break and also help maintain your health. The cost of respite care will depend on the type of care and accommodation you choose, as well as what support is included in your NDIS plan. There are a few different types of respite care:

  • In-home respite care: where someone stays with you in your own home for a few hours or days each week. They may help with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping and washing clothes. This usually comes with some sort of accommodation but not always. It’s also possible to hire an in-home caregiver.
  • Residential respite: where someone stays overnight at a disability respite accommodation to give the primary carer some time off from caring responsibilities during the day (or vice versa).

Emergency Respite Care

As one of the most advanced disability respite accommodation providers in Melbourne, we understand that not everything will always go according to plan. Your carer may suddenly become sick, injured or become temporarily unavailable to care for you. That’s why we provide urgent respite care for families that need some extra support. We have a range of residential respite care vacancies available in Melbourne, Victoria.

Frequently Asked Questions

STA NDIS is a type of support that is provided to people with a disability where they are able to have a short stay away from their home. STA housing services are delivered by NDIS service providers that have been approved by the NDIS.

During your stay at one of our STA houses, our certified support workers will be there to assist you with your daily living and support you to connect with your community.

Yes. The NDIS funds Short Term Accommodation (STA) under the core support category ‘assistance with daily living’ in your NDIS plan. However if STA housing is not the right solution for you and you require longer term accommodation, other options such as Supported Independent Living and Medium Term Accommodation are more likely to be included in your plan.

Eligibility for funding is assessed by the NDIS on a case-by-case basis. It will only be included in your plan if it is deemed as a reasonable and necessary support that will fulfil your needs and assist you towards reaching your goals.

In order to assess your eligibility, the NDIS will ask a few key questions such as:

  • Does Short Term Accommodation help you to pursue your goals?
  • Does Short Term Accommodation help you to participate in your community?
  • Is the need for STA related to your disability?

The NDIS needs to see that the support you receive from STA is warranted, beneficial and relevant to your disability.

If you are eligible for STA funding, it’s important to note that the NDIS will only fund a maximum of 28 days per year. You have complete control over how you choose to be supported. The only limitation is that you are unable to receive Short Term Accommodation for more than 14 consecutive days.

NDIS short term accommodation rates can be found at ndis.gov.au/providers/pricing-arrangements. The exact amount you will receive is dependent on numerous factors such as the ratio of support you require for STA NDIS.

STA NDIS rates

NDIS STA rates are determined by the prices set in the NDIS Price Guide, which is reviewed and updated on an annual basis. The cost of STA is included in the participant’s budget and is determined by their individual needs and goals as outlined in their NDIS plan.

There are three levels of respite supports available for funding as part of plans:

Level 1: 7 to 14 days per year to allow the career to attend important activities.
Level 2: 14 to 28 days per year which includes a plan to develop your independence
Level 3: Equivalent of 28 days per year, w
hen the carer provides support most days and informal support is at risk of not continuing due to the intensity of the support required or severe behavioural issues.

If you are eligible for respite funding, it will include funding for accommodation in a group residence for a short period of time – typically up to 14 days at a time.

There are many NDIS service providers throughout Australia that deliver STA accommodation such as Hikma House. Once you have been approved as an NDIS participant and receive your plan, you can decide which NDIS provider you’d like to receive STA support from.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to do this alone. Your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) will be there to help you explore your options. Websites such as housinghub.org.au are a fantastic way to search for STA providers near you.

STA will include all expenses relevant and necessary to support you such as assistance with personal-care, community access activities, accommodation, food and negotiated activities.

Respite care givers are responsible for day and overnight care to NDIS participants. Responsibilities and duties may include:

  • Completing domestic tasks such as cleaning and meal preparation
  • Assisting with taking medication
  • Supporting with personal care such as showering, hygiene and other activities of personal living
  • Empowering participants to connect with and explore their community
  • Supporting participants to enjoy every moment and to have fun at their NDIS respite accommodation.

NDIS providers can deliver short-term accommodation (STA) for a maximum of 28 days within a year. Additionally, there is a restriction on the consecutive number of days that STA can be used, which is 14 days.

To be eligible for STA, it should be in the participant’s plan and must be used for the purpose of respite, crisis, or to support the transition to a more permanent arrangement. STA should not be used as a long-term accommodation solution and should be reviewed regularly in the participant’s plan.
