What is Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is a type of supported accommodation for individuals with a disability. MTA is designed to provide NDIS participants with a safe, appropriate temporary housing solution while they wait for their more permanent house to be ready.

Unlike Short Term Accommodation (STA), MTA can be provided to NDIS participants for up to 90 days.

MTA Funding

How does the NDIS fund MTA?

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is funded under Core Supports in your NDIS plan. In order for the NDIS to fund this type of support, they require evidence that you have a home to move into once the MTA funding has concluded.

MTA funding only covers the cost of the accommodation which means you will still be require to pay for your day to day living costs such as groceries, food, utility bills etc.

How do I qualify for MTA funding?

The NDIS needs to deem MTA funding as reasonable and necessary for a person depending on their situation such as:

  • Leaving the hospital, aged care or a custodial setting
  • No longer having access to supports or a home to live in
  • Waiting for your permanent home to be ready or a vacancy in a place where you want to live

The NDIS MTA guidelines are the rules, requirements and recommendations that the NDIS has put together into one document. Within these guidelines, the NDIS explains that there are several types of supports that might be included in your plan, it all just depends on your current circumstances. The NDIS is flexible and will decide which type of support may be better suited for you. This could be Short Term Accommodation (STA), Supported Independent Living (SIL), Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) or Medium Term Accommodation (MTA).

There are many other guidelines for Medium Term Accommodation that is covered by the NDIS such as eligibility for MTA, whether MTA meets your NDIS funding criteria, how much the NDIS funds for MTA and how you can get MTA in your plan.
