In order for a disability to be covered under the NDIS, an individuals disability or medical condition must cause permanent impairment. This means that their disability must be permanent rather than temporary. The disability may be physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, visual, hearing, or psychosocial.
There are two main ways to access disability services.
- The first and more common approach is to be eligible for NDIS support. If you pass the NDIS eligibility, you are able to complete the NDIS access request form. From here, the NDIS will assist you in creating an NDIS plan and help you connect with a disability support agency that matches your needs and preferences.
- The second approach (if you are not eligible for support from the NDIS) is to gain assistance from other funding programs such as:
- State government funding programs (state funded community health services and early intervention programs)
- Community based organisations (charities, non-profit groups etc)
- Private funding (private health insurance or out of pocket)
- Medicare (limited to medical services and treatment provided by medical practioners)
No, the NDIS will only fund supports for things that are related to your disability. Below is a list of what is not funded under the NDIS:
- Supports that are unrelated to your disability
- Supports that may expose you to any danger or pose a risk to others
- Day to day living costs that are unrelated to a participants support needs
- Supports that are outside the scope of the NDIS and provided via other government agencies systems or community service
