What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a paid personal support that may utilises long term accommodation for people with a disability. SIL housing is suitable for individuals that enjoy living independently but also require some extra support to meet their daily needs.

Our team at Hikma House takes the time to learn about you, your goals and needs in order to match you up with support staff that share similar personalities, interest and goals.

As an SIL provider, our goal is to provide you with the ability to choose where and how you want to live. We’ll be there to help you develop your independence, confidence and skillset in a fun, safe and adventurous way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Supported independent Living is for people living with a disability that have higher support needs. This means they require high level support 7 days a week and even overnight. SIL is flexible and can be provided regardless of whether you live alone or with other NDIS participants.

SIL funding may cover supports that meet the NDIS funding criteria such as:
– Personal care needs such as showering, dressing etc…
– Participating in activities within the household
– Managing and maintaining household duties such as preparing meals and cleaning the home.
– Assistance with implementing behaviour support plans
– Assistance with taking medication
– Assistance with travel
– Assistance to help you connect with your community and participate in community events

NDIS participants are not able to use SIL funding for any day-to-day living costs that are unrelated to their disability support needs such as:
– Rent or other day to day expenses like shopping
– Utility bills such as water and gas
– Holidays, travel costs etc..

In order to gain access to SIL funding, a set criteria must be met. This criteria states that SIL must be based on ‘reasonable & necessary supports’.

Eligibility must also :
– Provide evidence that you are unable to live without 24/7 supports. This is recognised through a Functional Assessment Report (FAR) undertaken by an Allied Health professional.
– Provide an identifying Housing solutions report by a support coordinator.

If you are currently an NDIS participant who requires higher support needs every day, then you may be suitable for SIL accommodation. However if you’re unsure, there are other types of home and living supports that may be better suited for you. Short Term Accommodation (STA), Medium Term Accommodation (MTA), Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA) and individualised living supports are all options that are available to you.

If you’re unsure about which option is the most suitable for you, contact us to learn which support will work best for you.
